Seven journalists were released from a Turkish jail on Friday after spending nine months behind bars on charges of aiding a terrorist organization. The journalists are employees of  Cumhuriyet,  Turkey’s oldest newspaper and one of the nation’s few remaining independent news outlets. Their court case represents that largest trial of journalists in Turkey since a failed coup against the Turkish government in July of last year. All together, 17  Cumhuriyet  staffers have been detained on terrorism-related charges. On Friday, an Instanbul court ruled that five of the staffers, including the paper’s top executive, would remain in detention ahead of a second court hearing. “ISIS Claims Attack on U.S.-Backed Troops in Syria”

ISIS claimed responsibility on Friday for an attack on U.S.-backed forces near Raqqa, the militant group’s de-facto capital in Syria. The attack took place on Thursday as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)—an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters—advanced into an ISIS stronghold in the Homs province. ISIS claimed that two armored vehicles were destroyed and 53 members of the SDF were killed in the attack, though an SDF spokeswoman, Nisreen Abdullah, said their estimate was exaggerated. Telling reporters that ISIS was “facing collapse” in Raqqa, Abdullah argued that the militant group had inflated the death toll in order to “boost the morale of its fighters.” While ISIS continues to wage attacks against SDF fighters in the region, it has been steadily losing control of Raqqa following the launch of a U.S.-backed military campaign in 2016. On June 6, the SDF announced the start of an offensive to overtake Raqqa city, with troops attacking from the north, east, and west. By Wednesday

North Korea launches second long-range ICBM missile

North Korea has launched another intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the Pentagon said Friday, an action that is likely to increase tensions with its neighbors and the U.S., and result in international pressure on Pyongyang over its missile and nuclear programs. The test comes three weeks after North Korea tested an ICBM that expert said could reach Alaska. At the time, experts said the missile had a range of about 7,000 kilometers. Based on preliminary data, experts said, Friday’s missile could travel farther, potentially putting the contiguous U.S. well within its range. Yoshihide Suga, Japan’s chief cabinet secretary,  said  Friday the projectile was fired at 11:42 p.m. local time, flew for about 45 minutes, and landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone. The Pentagon  said  the ICBM traveled about 1,000 kilometers before splashing down in the Sea of Japan.   Jeffrey Lewis, who runs the website Arms Control Wonk,  said  on Twitter: “A 45 minute flight time means were

The 11-month-old’s case touched on sensitive moral and political questions about the role of the state at the end of life. Charlie Gard, the 11-month-old terminally ill British baby, has died, his parents announced Friday, just days after  ending  their legal challenge to take him to the U.S. for experimental treatment. “Our beautiful little boy has gone, we are so proud of you Charlie,” his parents said in a statement. Connie Yates and Chris Gard, Charlie’s parents, ended Monday their legal fight to take him to the U.S. after a specialist who examined the baby said it was too late to treat him with experimental nucleoside therapy. Charlie had been on life support since October 2016—and following his parents’ decision Monday the question was whether Charlie would die at home or be taken to hospice care. His parents said it was their “last wish” for Charlie to die at home, but they were unable to find a round-the-clock team that could look after him. Charlie was taken Thursday
