Victims of civil war to be paid N88bn by FG

Image
The Federal Government has agreed to pay N88 billion as compensation to victims of the Civil War in some affected states in the country. This was the outcome of the consent judgment delivered by the ECOWAS Court of Justice in a case of negligence by the Federal Government to remove remnants of landmines and explosives from the civil war. A consent judgment is issued when two parties agree to a settlement to end a lawsuit; the parties write up an agreement for the judge to sign. The suit, filed by Mr Vincent Agu and 19 others against the Federal Government in 2012, had claimed that the government had failed to remove remnants of landmines and explosives since the end of the civil war in 1970. They claimed that the lethal explosives had maimed, killed and destroyed innocent lives in their various communities. The plaintiffs also claimed that apart from physical injuries, the abandonment of the war weapons had deprived them of the use of their farmlands, schools and churche

Emile Cilliers denies attempting to murder his wife in April 2015 The wife of an Army sergeant accused of trying to kill her told a court "everything went black" as she struggled with her failing parachute. Victoria Cilliers, 40, suffered multiple injuries in a 4,000ft near-fatal fall at Netheravon Airfield, Wiltshire, in April 2015. Emile Cilliers, 37, denies two counts of attempted murder. His former army officer wife told Winchester Crown Court she was forced to cut away the main parachute. "I can't remember if I pulled the reserve or it deployed automatically.... it was very twisted." Prosecutors allege Mr Cilliers, based with the Aldershot-based Royal Army Physical Training Corps, twisted the lines of his wife's main parachute and sabotaged a reserve chute the day before her jump. Three UN peacekeepers in northern Mali were killed Thursday and another two injured when their vehicle struck a “mine or an improvised explosive device,” the United Nations Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) said. The blast occurred at around 1430 GMT when the vehicle was escorting “a logistical convoy” north of Kidal, on a highway between Tessalit and Aguelhok, it said in a statement, adding that the toll was still provisional. “Following the explosion, three peacekeepers lost their lives and two others were injured, according to a provisional toll,” MINUSMA said, adding the survivors were being taken to Kidal. Interim UN mission head Koen Davidse said he vigorously condemned “such despicable acts whose sole aim is to destabilise the country and jeopardise the ongoing peace process in Mali.” He said MINUSMA remained determined to work to bring peace to the country and warned that attacks on peacekeepers could be construed as war crimes.
