The Federal Government has agreed to pay N88 billion as compensation to victims of the Civil War in some affected states in the country. This was the outcome of the consent judgment delivered by the ECOWAS Court of Justice in a case of negligence by the Federal Government to remove remnants of landmines and explosives from the civil war. A consent judgment is issued when two parties agree to a settlement to end a lawsuit; the parties write up an agreement for the judge to sign. The suit, filed by Mr Vincent Agu and 19 others against the Federal Government in 2012, had claimed that the government had failed to remove remnants of landmines and explosives since the end of the civil war in 1970. They claimed that the lethal explosives had maimed, killed and destroyed innocent lives in their various communities. Abisogun Leigh Street, Ogba, Lagos State was the cynosure of all eyes on Sunday when two apparent lovebirds were found dead in a Toyota Corolla parked by the roadside. Although the names of the deceased had yet to be revealed, they were said to have been respectively married. We  learnt that the man was found in the driver’s side, half naked, with his private parts showing, while the woman, who wore a gown, reclined in the passenger seat next to him. Three UN peacekeepers in northern Mali were killed Thursday and another two injured when their vehicle struck a “mine or an improvised explosive device,” the United Nations Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) said. The blast occurred at around 1430 GMT when the vehicle was escorting “a logistical convoy” north of Kidal, on a highway between Tessalit and Aguelhok, it said in a statement, adding that the toll was still provisional. “Following the explosion, three peacekeepers lost their lives and two others were injured, according to a provisional toll,” MINUSMA said, adding the survivors were being taken to Kidal. Interim UN mission head Koen Davidse said he vigorously condemned “such despicable acts whose sole aim is to destabilise the country and jeopardise the ongoing peace process in Mali.” He said MINUSMA remained determined to work to bring peace to the country and warned that attacks on peacekeepers could be construed as war crimes. Team Great Britain, boxer Muhammad Ali, has been provisionally suspended from all international and domestic competitions after testing positive for a banned steroid, the international amateur boxing association says. Ali tested positive during a World Series Boxing match between Morocco Atlas Lions and British Lionhearts in Casablanca in April. AIBA said on its website on Thursday it would not make any further comment on the matter until its anti-doping panel had heard the 21-year-old’s case.
